G reen Walls, Living Walls, Vertical Gardens, call it what you may, they have arrived, and are here to stay! It is not surprising to see these living walls dominate the internet searches on modern contemporary garden design ideas. Modern, contemporary – yeah right!! Vertical gardens began as an experiment in 1988 by Patrick Blanc, a French botanist intent on creating a garden without soil. An experiment which might have altered the way we think about urban or domestic space as a whole. In theory, these green walls started off twenty three years ago, yet have taken years to make an appearance. Not just that, but has become so popular, that they now globally dominate landscape design as we see it. Re-use, Re-duce, Re-cycle!

I really admire those who make an effort to recycle. As my new year’s resolution I decided to commit to recycling our household material. I set out, hunting for my tri-colored bins labeled Glass and Tins, Paper and Plastics. Got back home, post an announcement on the Kitchen black board to PLEASE RECYCLE. To my amazement, things worked out well… until the bins had to be emptied…! I find it extremely annoying to drive to the suburb after the next, to take my three bags of waste to the recycling depot. It’s a hassle, and people do not like being hassled with yet another thing to add to their busy routine. On my Project however, I found that it actually simplifies things allot by grouping site refuse. I have created a system where we pile our refuse in groups according to their recycling attributes, and then deliver them by the load at the nearest recycling depot. Social Networks or Social Nightmares

Absolutely amazing how you can leave a comment on Facebook , automatically and instantly have it sent to your Twitter account, which links it with your Blog . From your Blog you can like it on Facebook , post a Blog post, tweet as a Tweet , send it to a friend via Gmail – and that’s only the beginning…! Then there are applications and networks such as Disqus , where a comment posted reflects on your Blog and vice-versa. I haven’t even reached the point to edit my Waynne profile, Linkedin profile, Google buzz , Badoo and heavens know what else there is out there!? But, are these attributing to our lives, or just making it more complex. Isn’t one central social network enough? See, I believe people are individuals who prefer certain things over others. I might be absolutely delighted with navigating Facebook , whilst another might despise it, and prefer to use Myspace . PROJECT GREEN LANDSCAPE STUDIO: Before and Afters I loved designing and installing this project. It still feels so unreal when seeing the initial photos taken of the site. The drop from the house to the boundary wall was a staggering 1.8 m over 13 meters. That's serious stuff- you would have needed a Land Cruiser to access the garden. With the innovative concept of building these 'wings', on various levels, ensured that not only would the garden become accessible, but perfectly level. That is the essence of design - at first glance it seemed impossible to come up with concrete solutions, yet thanks to careful thought and numerous calculations, the area reached its utmost potential, converting it to a perfect, livable setting. Footnote: not a single cube of soil had to be imported! Whatever came out from the foundations for the retaining walls, were used for the backfill! Had this not been the case, supplying top soil would have been a tedious job, at a massive expense, and

Before and Afters

When it comes to home alterations of any kind, it's obvious that what sells them are the before and after photos. Why? because, I believe it's the true test of whether your contractor knows what his doing. I would not even consider using a contractor at my property if I have not seen any of his work. The failure of following thru this important step, has had many a client left in despair with work they had to pay for! With that said, I personally feed of these results! I just love the dramatic differences. The stark, dead and boring, revived into something spectacular! Almost poetic as death is brought back to life! The afters truly speak for themselves.... Before... And the Afters.....
